Pregnancy back pain
That amazing time has arrived when becoming a mother is just around the corner.
You are feeling amazing right? Because isn’t that what supposed to happen? Certainly, in some cases women respond to pregnancy with a revitalised feeling of health. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
In some cases it can be in fact quite the opposite and you may experience symptoms including:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Mood swings
- Food aversion and/or cravings
And as time goes on:
Sorry, it doesn’t feel so exciting now does it. Don’t despair these are only possible symptoms.
Lets talk about one of the big ones, back pain during pregnancy.
Why do you get back pain during pregnancy?
Pregnancy is a massive change to the body and through the process of change there can be some sticking points including back pain. As your baby to be begins to gain weight naturally the body has to adjust to cater for this change so you can be prepared for birth. This process involves hormones such as relaxin which as the name suggests relaxes ligaments, tendons and the uterine wall in order to make room for growth.
Through this process different joints of the body can operate differently and, in some cases, not function properly resulting in back and hip pain.
What can I do to help with back pain during pregnancy?
There are a myriad of options to help reduce the impact of back pain during pregnancy including:
- Chinese herbal medicine

How does Chinese herbal medicine help with back pain?
The most important thing to recognise is that Evolve Natural Medicine practitioners are highly trained and experienced in the use of Chinese herbs during pregnancy.
One review (1) of randomised control trials showed the use of Chinese herbs may assist in the management of neuropathic pain.
A Cochrane review (2) of 14 studies found the use of Chinese herbal medicine to have therapeutic effect in the back pain. some studies showed similar or greater effect than the use of western medicine pain relief medication.
